What is transitional housing?
Transitional housing is a structured, short-term accommodation model designed to support individuals and families who are moving from crisis situations into stable, long-term housing. It acts as a bridge between homelessness, unsafe environments, or institutional care and fully independent living.
Unlike emergency shelters, transitional housing provides a more stable, private environment where residents can rebuild their lives over a period typically ranging from a few months up to two years. The core purpose is not only to provide a safe place to stay, but to deliver intensive housing management that addresses the underlying issues contributing to housing instability.
By combining accommodation with structured intensive housing management, transitional housing helps residents develop the skills, confidence, and stability needed to sustain long-term housing — contributing to stronger communities and improved life outcomes for vulnerable people.
